SUMMARY:ASA 107 - Celestial Navigation Workshop | April 10th\, April 11th\, April 17th\, April 18th\, 2027 | Milwaukee\, WI
DESCRIPTION:Look beyond the chartplotter and learn to find your position by reading the sky. \nASA 107 Celestial Navigation is an advanced course for sailors who want to move beyond electronic navigation and understand one of the oldest and most rewarding skills in seamanship. Using the sun\, moon\, stars and planets\, you’ll learn how mariners have crossed oceans for centuries — and why these traditional skills still matter today. \nThrough classroom instruction\, guided calculations and practical sextant work\, you’ll learn how celestial observations are taken\, corrected\, reduced and converted into lines of position. You’ll practice working with time\, using the Nautical Almanac\, plotting celestial fixes and understanding how the apparent motion of celestial bodies relates to your position on the earth. \nCelestial navigation is not just a backup to GPS. It is a discipline that sharpens your awareness\, builds confidence and connects you to the art of ocean sailing in a way no screen ever can. Along the way\, we’ll also discuss how attentive mariners use natural observations such as light\, clouds\, swell patterns\, direction and time to build a broader sense of where they are and what is happening around the vessel. \nThis course is not about abandoning modern electronics. It is about developing the knowledge and confidence to understand your position independently\, verify what electronic systems are telling you and maintain a dependable navigational backup for offshore sailing. \nWhat You’ll Learn\nThroughout the course\, you’ll learn how to: \n\nUnderstand the basic principles of the celestial sphere\nIdentify navigational stars\, planets and other useful celestial bodies\nUnderstand how time\, longitude and celestial observations are connected\nUse Coordinated Universal Time and maintain accurate sight records\nIdentify the parts of a sextant and explain how the instrument works\nCheck and correct common sextant errors\nTake accurate sextant sights\nApply the necessary corrections to observed altitude\nUse the Nautical Almanac and sight-reduction resources\nReduce celestial observations through calculation\nConvert observations into lines of position\nPlot celestial lines of position and determine a fix\nCalculate latitude using a meridian passage or noon sight\nUse multiple observations to improve the accuracy of a position\nEvaluate potential errors and the reliability of a celestial fix\nIncorporate celestial navigation into offshore voyage planning\nUse celestial navigation as a backup to electronic systems\nRecognize how selected natural observations can improve situational awareness at sea\n\nWeather permitting\, students will also have opportunities to practice taking sights outdoors and apply classroom concepts using actual observations. \nPrerequisites\nStudents should hold ASA 105 Coastal Navigation \nStudents should be comfortable reading nautical charts\, plotting positions and courses\, and completing basic navigation calculations. DESCRIPTION:Step up to true offshore sailing with Sea Safaris’ ASA 108: Offshore Passagemaking course\, departing from South Shore Yacht Club in Milwaukee. \nThis advanced five-day liveaboard course is designed for experienced sailors who want to confidently plan and execute multi-day\, nonstop passages while sailing day and night away from the comfort of the marina. \nOver five days aboard\, you’ll stand watches\, sail through the night\, and experience real offshore decision-making during extended legs across the Great Lakes. Students rotate through the roles of skipper\, watch captain\, navigator\, helmsman\, lookout\, and crew while working together to safely operate the vessel around the clock. \nOur route will be shaped by weather and lake conditions. The passage is planned to include at least 72 continuous hours and 100 nautical miles without touching land\, meeting the passage requirements for ASA 108 while providing genuine passagemaking experience rather than a series of day sails. \nWhat You’ll Learn\nASA 108 develops the advanced navigation\, seamanship\, leadership\, and decision-making skills required to manage an extended offshore passage\, including: \n\nLong-term passage planning and weather routing\nGreat Circle routes and rhumb-line plotting\nOffshore route selection and voyage preparation\nVessel and crew preparation\nFood provisioning and water management\nPower management and boat systems underway\nNight sailing\, navigation lights\, and collision avoidance\nOffshore watch schedules and watchkeeping responsibilities\nMaintaining an accurate vessel log\nCelestial navigation and obtaining fixes underway\nAdvanced sail handling and sail planning\nHeavy-weather preparation and strategies\nOffshore safety and emergency procedures\nCrew-overboard prevention and recovery\nFire\, lightning strike\, dismasting\, and equipment-failure response\nOffshore first aid and medical considerations\nAbandon-ship procedures and survival equipment\nRoutine maintenance\, troubleshooting\, and repairs underway\nPreventing chafe and addressing rigging or sail damage\nSkipper responsibilities\, crew leadership\, and offshore decision-making\n\nStudents will rotate through the responsibilities involved in continuously operating the vessel. This includes standing watches\, navigating\, monitoring weather and traffic\, maintaining onboard systems\, managing resources\, completing routine vessel checks\, and making decisions as conditions change. \nPrevious celestial navigation training will be put into practice during the passage. Students will apply advanced navigation skills to passage planning and execution while completing the required celestial observations and fixes underway. \nPrerequisites\nStudents entering ASA 108 should hold: \nASA 106 Advanced Coastal Cruising \nASA 107: Celestial Navigation or ASA 117: Basic Celestial Endorsement \nThese advanced certifications build upon the earlier ASA 101\, ASA 103\, ASA 104\, and ASA 105 standards. Students should arrive able to demonstrate the knowledge and practical skills covered throughout that certification pathway. \nASA 108 is intended for experienced sailors who are physically and mentally prepared for extended periods underway\, interrupted sleep\, nighttime sailing\, watch rotations\, changing weather\, and the demands of living and working aboard during a nonstop passage. \nWhat’s Included\nCourse tuition includes: \n\nFive days of advanced liveaboard sailing instruction\nASA 108: Offshore Passagemaking instruction\nAn offshore passage planned to include at least 72 continuous hours and 100 nautical miles without touching land\nASA 108 textbook and course materials mailed to the student upon sign-up\, ahead of class\nASA 108 written examination and practical skills assessment\nASA 108 certification upon successful completion\nInstruction from professional USCG-licensed captains\n\nAll of your sailing time aboard our training sailboat\, including use of the boat and all required navigation tools\, and safety equipment \nThe exact route and passage schedule will be determined by weather\, wind\, lake conditions\, and the captain’s judgment.
