DESCRIPTION:ASA 101 Keelboat Sailing 1 is where your sailing journey begins. Designed for new sailors with little or no previous experience\, this two-day course combines practical instruction with extensive time on the water \nYou’ll learn aboard a 22-foot\, tiller-steered Hunter 216\, which is an excellent boat for developing a strong understanding of how a sailboat responds to the wind\, sails\, rudder\, and crew. Classes are limited to a maximum of four students\, giving everyone substantial hands-on time at the helm\, trimming sails\, and practicing each crew position. \nThe course is held Saturday and Sunday from 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM. You’ll learn how to prepare the boat and crew for departure\, maneuver and dock safely\, understand essential onboard systems\, interpret weather information\, anchor securely\, and respond to common emergencies. \nUpon successfully completing the course requirements\, you’ll earn your ASA 103 certification and have the knowledge and skills needed to skipper a 25- to 35-foot sloop-rigged\, auxiliary-powered keelboat during daylight hours in moderate winds and sea conditions. \nBy the end of the course\, you’ll have greater confidence handling a cruising sailboat and a solid foundation for planning and enjoying daytime coastal cruises. Whether you are preparing for your next ASA course\, returning to sailing after time away or simply want more experience on the water\, this course will help rebuild your confidence. \nThere is no examination because you already completed that requirement when you earned your ASA 101 certification. DESCRIPTION:Step aboard Calypso\, our 41-foot Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 409\, for five days and four nights of sailing\, cruising\, learning\, and exploring Wisconsin’s Lake Michigan coast.\n\nBy day\, you’ll learn to sail and operate a genuine cruising yacht while working toward ASA 101 Keelboat Sailing 1\, ASA 103 Coastal Cruising\, and ASA 104 Bareboat Cruising.\n\nBy evening\, after Calypso is safely docked and the sailing day is complete\, we’ll head ashore to experience another Wisconsin tradition\, local craft beer! Our planned adventure takes us from South Shore Yacht Club in Milwaukee to Port Washington\, Sheboygan\, a night at anchor\, and back to Milwaukee\, combining serious hands-on sailing instruction with the fun of traveling from port to port aboard your own floating home.\n\nSail by day. Explore by night. Go home a certified sailor.\n\nThis Isn’t Just a Sailing Class\n\nThis trip is about learning how those skills come together when you actually go cruising. For five days\, Calypso becomes your classroom\, transportation\, and home. You’ll sail from one destination to another\, navigate the Lake Michigan shoreline\, enter unfamiliar harbors\, dock for the evening\, live aboard\, manage the boat’s systems and resources\, spend a night at anchor\, and wake up the next morning ready to do it again.\n\nStudents don’t simply watch the instructor operate the boat. You become the skippper in charge! Everyone rotates through the positions aboard Calypso. As the week progresses\, Captain Don increasingly steps back and students take responsibility for steering\, trimming sails\, navigating\, docking\, anchoring\, planning passages\, directing the crew\, making decisions\, and ultimately serving as skipper.\n\nCaptain Don remains there to coach\, teach\, challenge your decisions\, and intervene when necessary but the goal is to progressively put you in command. That’s where sailing skills begin turning into cruising confidence.\n\nYour Port-to-Pint Adventure\nOur planned five-day route follows Wisconsin’s Lake Michigan shoreline\, with sailing and training during the day and a different experience waiting at the end of each passage.\n\nMilwaukee → Port Washington\n\nWe depart South Shore Yacht Club and begin sailing north toward Port Washington. The first passage introduces the fundamentals of sailing while immediately putting those skills to work aboard a full-size cruising boat.\n\nAfter securing Calypso in Port Washington for the evening\, we’ll head ashore and celebrate our first passage with a visit to Inventors Brewpub\, where the crew can enjoy dinner and sample a flight of locally brewed beer.\n\nPort Washington → Sheboygan\n\nThe next morning\, we continue north to Sheboygan. Students take on increasing responsibility for sail trim\, steering\, navigation\, weather awareness\, boat systems\, crew coordination\, and entering and departing harbors.\n\nOnce Calypso is secured for the evening\, we’ll head over to 3 Sheeps Brewing for samples of Wisconsin craft beer and order pizza from a local favorite.\n\nA Night at Anchor\n\nOne night\, we’ll trade the marina for something every cruising sailor should experience: a night on the hook. Students will select an appropriate anchorage\, determine depth and scope\, prepare the ground tackle\, deploy and set the anchor\, verify that it’s holding\, and learn how a cruising crew manages a boat overnight away from the dock. Once the boat is safely anchored and the day’s responsibilities are finished\, we’ll break out our own selection of Wisconsin craft bottles for a special Brews at Anchor tasting aboard Calypso.\n\nDinner aboard. Sunset over the lake. A few interesting Wisconsin beers. And your sailboat swinging quietly on her anchor for the night. Now this is cruising!\n\nBack to Milwaukee\n\nOur final major passage brings us back south toward Milwaukee. By this point\, students are doing far more than they were on Monday. You’ll be planning\, navigating\, handling the boat\, communicating as a crew\, evaluating conditions\, and making many of the decisions necessary to get Calypso safely to her destination. After securing the boat near Milwaukee\, our final planned brewery outing takes us to New Barons Brewing Cooperative\, Wisconsin’s first cooperatively owned brewery\, for one last evening together.\n\nThe following morning\, we’ll make our final sail back to South Shore Yacht Club\, complete remaining skills and assessments\, and bring our Lake Michigan adventure to a close.\n\nOur Port-to-Pint itinerary is weather dependent. Lake conditions\, marina availability\, brewery schedules\, and the captain’s judgment may require destinations or evening activities to change. DESCRIPTION:ASA 103 Coastal Cruising is the next step in your sailing journey. Building on the skills learned in ASA 101\, this hands-on course introduces you to the operation of a larger cruising sailboat and prepares you for greater responsibility as both skipper and crew. \nThroughout this intensive two-day course\, you’ll gain practical experience handling an auxiliary-powered sailboat under both sail and power. You’ll learn how to prepare the boat and crew for departure\, maneuver and dock safely\, understand essential onboard systems\, interpret weather information\, anchor securely\, and respond to common emergencies. \nUpon successfully completing the course requirements\, you’ll earn your ASA 103 certification and have the knowledge and skills needed to skipper a 25- to 35-foot sloop-rigged\, auxiliary-powered keelboat during daylight hours in moderate winds and sea conditions. \nBy the end of the course\, you’ll have greater confidence handling a cruising sailboat and a solid foundation for planning and enjoying daytime coastal cruises. ASA 103 also prepares you to continue your sailing education with ASA 104: Bareboat Cruising. \nThis is a two day course that runs each day from 8:30 am – 4:30 pm. \nWhat You’ll Learn \nASA 103 expands your sailing knowledge and introduces the practical skills needed for safe\, enjoyable daytime coastal cruising\, including: \n\nCruising sailboat terminology and equipment\nPreparing the vessel and crew for departure\nBasic sailboat systems and auxiliary engine operation\nPre-departure checks and safety procedures\nManeuvering under sail and power\nDocking and departing from a dock\nIntermediate sail trim and sail handling\nReefing and responding to changing conditions\nAnchoring procedures and selecting an appropriate anchorage\nBasic navigation and chart reading\nAids to navigation and navigation rules\nWeather observation and interpretation\nCrew-overboard prevention and recovery\nEmergency procedures and problem-solving\nLine handling\, knots\, and marlinspike seamanship\nSkipper and crew communication and responsibilities\n\nPrerequisites \nASA 101 Keelboat Sailing 1 certification is required. Students should also be able to demonstrate the knowledge and practical skills covered in the ASA 101 standard. \nAmerican Sailing recommends completing at least 24 hours of on-the-water sailing experience before beginning ASA 103. Additional time practicing the skills learned in ASA 101 will help you arrive prepared to make the most of this more advanced course. \nWhat’s Included \nCourse tuition includes: \n\nTwo days of sailing instruction\nASA 103 Coastal Cruising instruction\nASA 103 Coastal Cruising Made Easy textbook and course materials\, mailed to you ahead of class so you can prepare before arriving.\nASA 103 written examination and practical skills assessment\nASA 103 certification upon successful completion\nAll of your sailing time aboard our training sailboat\, including use of the boat and all required sailing equipment.\nA no-cost make-up session if severe or unsafe weather prevents the class from completing the required on-the-water skills\n\nSailing is naturally weather dependent. Whenever possible\, we adjust the day’s activities around changing conditions.
