SUMMARY:ASA 103/104 – Lake Michigan Intensive Learn-to-Sail Adventure - Coastal to Bareboat Cruising Combo | July 5th through July 9th\, 2027 | Port Washington\, WI
DESCRIPTION:Turn five days on Lake Michigan into the sailing experience that takes you from basic sailing skills to confidently cruising a larger sailboat. \nThis intensive ASA 103 Basic Coastal Cruising and ASA 104 Bareboat Cruising course combines two ASA certifications with a five-day cruising adventure along Wisconsin’s Lake Michigan shoreline. \nRather than returning to the same marina after each lesson\, we’re going cruising. \nStudents depart Port Washington on Monday and spend the week sailing north along the Lake Michigan coast\, visiting Sheboygan and Manitowoc\, spending a day practicing anchoring and living aboard at anchor\, and ultimately sailing back to Port Washington on Friday. \nThroughout the voyage\, students become active members of the crew and rotate through the responsibilities involved in operating a cruising sailboat. \nWhat You’ll Learn\nThe first part of the voyage concentrates on the skills required for ASA 103 Basic Coastal Cruising\, including: \n\nCruising sailboat systems and equipment\nSail handling\, reefing and sail trim\nSteering and maneuvering under sail\nBasic coastal navigation\nRules of the Road\nWeather awareness\nCrew-overboard procedures\nDocking and maneuvering under power\nAnchoring fundamentals\nSkipper and crew responsibilities\n\nAs the week progresses\, we’ll build into the skills required for ASA 104 Bareboat Cruising\, including: \n\nPassage and cruise planning\nCruising boat systems\nEngine operation and troubleshooting\nElectrical\, water and sanitation systems\nAdvanced docking and maneuvering\nAnchoring techniques\nSelecting an anchorage\nCalculating and setting proper scope\nNavigation and piloting\nWeather interpretation and decision-making\nEmergency procedures\nProvisioning and living aboard\nSkipper responsibilities and crew management\n\nThe goal isn’t simply to pass two ASA courses. It’s to experience what it’s actually like to plan\, sail and manage a multi-day cruise aboard a cruising sailboat. \nOur Five-Day Cruise\nMonday – Port Washington to Sheboygan\nMeet aboard in Port Washington for orientation\, vessel familiarization and departure preparation.\nStudents participate in getting the boat underway and sail approximately 25 nautical miles north to Sheboygan.\nAlong the way we’ll concentrate on sail handling\, helming\, points of sail\, navigation\, crew coordination and the fundamental skills of ASA 103.\nAfter arriving in Sheboygan\, students participate in docking\, securing the vessel and preparing the boat for the night. \nTuesday – Sheboygan to Manitowoc\nAfter reviewing weather and planning our day’s passage\, we’ll continue north toward Manitowoc.\nStudents take increasing responsibility for operating the boat\, including navigation\, sail selection\, helm duties\, lookout responsibilities and making decisions based on weather and conditions.\nThe longer passage provides an opportunity to begin transitioning from ASA 103 sailing skills into ASA 104 cruising and skipper responsibilities. \nWednesday – Manitowoc and Southbound\nWe’ll begin working our way back south while concentrating on ASA 104 skills\, including passage planning\, navigation\, boat systems\, docking\, maneuvering and skipper responsibilities.\nStudents increasingly take responsibility for planning and operating the vessel under instructor supervision. \nThursday – Anchoring & Living Aboard\nThursday is devoted to one of the most important cruising skills: anchoring.\nWe’ll select an appropriate anchorage based on weather\, wind\, depth\, bottom conditions and protection.\nStudents will practice selecting an anchor location\, calculating scope\, deploying the anchor\, setting and testing its holding\, monitoring our position and safely retrieving the anchor.\nWe’ll also cover the practical side of spending time away from a marina: managing electrical power\, water\, onboard systems\, meals and crew comfort while at anchor.\nWeather permitting\, this provides students with the experience of spending an extended period aboard without relying on marina facilities. \nFriday – Return to Port Washington\nOur final day puts everything together.\nStudents participate in planning and navigating the return passage to Port Washington while rotating through skipper\, helm\, navigation and crew responsibilities.\nAfter returning to our home port\, we’ll complete remaining practical skills\, examinations and a final course debrief. \nA Real Cruising Experience\nThis is not a classroom course with occasional sailing lessons. \nFor five days\, the boat becomes our classroom. \nYou’ll experience marina departures and arrivals\, coastal passages\, navigation\, weather decisions\, living aboard\, anchoring and the everyday responsibilities involved in cruising a larger sailboat. \nThe exact itinerary may change based on weather\, wind\, lake conditions and the judgment of the captain. Making those decisions is itself an important part of learning to cruise safely. \nPrerequisites\nStudents should hold: \nASA 101 – Basic Keelboat Sailing or possess equivalent sailing experience and successfully challenge the ASA 101 requirements prior to beginning the course. \nWhat’s Included\nCourse tuition includes: \n\nFive days of liveaboard sailing instruction\nASA 103 Basic Coastal Cruising instruction\nASA 104 Bareboat Cruising instruction\nASA textbooks and course materials\nASA 103 examination\nASA 104 examination\nASA 103 certification\nASA 104 certification\nUse of onboard navigation and sailing equipment\n\nCourse Tuition\n\nShared Cabin – Double occupancy = $2457.00 pp\nPrivate Cabin – Single Passenger = $3197.00\n\nClass size is intentionally limited so every student receives substantial hands-on time sailing\, navigating\, docking\, anchoring and serving in the role of skipper. \nFive Days. Two ASA Certifications. One Lake Michigan Cruising Adventure. \nDon’t just learn how to sail. Learn how to go cruising. \n

SUMMARY:Ales & Sails 5-Day Learn to Sail & Craft Beer Adventure along Lake Michigan’s Brewery Coast | August 9th through August 13th\, 2027
DESCRIPTION:Step aboard Calypso\, our 41-foot Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 409\, for five days and four nights of sailing\, cruising\, learning\, and exploring Wisconsin’s Lake Michigan coast.\n\nBy day\, you’ll learn to sail and operate a genuine cruising yacht while working toward ASA 101 Keelboat Sailing 1\, ASA 103 Coastal Cruising\, and ASA 104 Bareboat Cruising.\n\nBy evening\, after Calypso is safely docked and the sailing day is complete\, we’ll head ashore to experience another Wisconsin tradition\, local craft beer! Our planned adventure takes us from South Shore Yacht Club in Milwaukee to Port Washington\, Sheboygan\, a night at anchor\, and back to Milwaukee\, combining serious hands-on sailing instruction with the fun of traveling from port to port aboard your own floating home.\n\nSail by day. Explore by night. Go home a certified sailor.\n\nThis Isn’t Just a Sailing Class\n\nThis trip is about learning how those skills come together when you actually go cruising. For five days\, Calypso becomes your classroom\, transportation\, and home. You’ll sail from one destination to another\, navigate the Lake Michigan shoreline\, enter unfamiliar harbors\, dock for the evening\, live aboard\, manage the boat’s systems and resources\, spend a night at anchor\, and wake up the next morning ready to do it again.\n\nStudents don’t simply watch the instructor operate the boat. You become the skippper in charge! Everyone rotates through the positions aboard Calypso. As the week progresses\, Captain Don increasingly steps back and students take responsibility for steering\, trimming sails\, navigating\, docking\, anchoring\, planning passages\, directing the crew\, making decisions\, and ultimately serving as skipper.\n\nCaptain Don remains there to coach\, teach\, challenge your decisions\, and intervene when necessary but the goal is to progressively put you in command. That’s where sailing skills begin turning into cruising confidence.\n\nYour Port-to-Pint Adventure\nOur planned five-day route follows Wisconsin’s Lake Michigan shoreline\, with sailing and training during the day and a different experience waiting at the end of each passage.\n\nMilwaukee → Port Washington\n\nWe depart South Shore Yacht Club and begin sailing north toward Port Washington. The first passage introduces the fundamentals of sailing while immediately putting those skills to work aboard a full-size cruising boat.\n\nAfter securing Calypso in Port Washington for the evening\, we’ll head ashore and celebrate our first passage with a visit to Inventors Brewpub\, where the crew can enjoy dinner and sample a flight of locally brewed beer.\n\nPort Washington → Sheboygan\n\nThe next morning\, we continue north to Sheboygan. Students take on increasing responsibility for sail trim\, steering\, navigation\, weather awareness\, boat systems\, crew coordination\, and entering and departing harbors.\n\nOnce Calypso is secured for the evening\, we’ll head over to 3 Sheeps Brewing for samples of Wisconsin craft beer and order pizza from a local favorite.\n\nA Night at Anchor\n\nOne night\, we’ll trade the marina for something every cruising sailor should experience: a night on the hook. Students will select an appropriate anchorage\, determine depth and scope\, prepare the ground tackle\, deploy and set the anchor\, verify that it’s holding\, and learn how a cruising crew manages a boat overnight away from the dock. Once the boat is safely anchored and the day’s responsibilities are finished\, we’ll break out our own selection of Wisconsin craft bottles for a special Brews at Anchor tasting aboard Calypso.\n\nDinner aboard. Sunset over the lake. A few interesting Wisconsin beers. And your sailboat swinging quietly on her anchor for the night. Now this is cruising!\n\nBack to Milwaukee\n\nOur final major passage brings us back south toward Milwaukee. By this point\, students are doing far more than they were on Monday. You’ll be planning\, navigating\, handling the boat\, communicating as a crew\, evaluating conditions\, and making many of the decisions necessary to get Calypso safely to her destination. After securing the boat near Milwaukee\, our final planned brewery outing takes us to New Barons Brewing Cooperative\, Wisconsin’s first cooperatively owned brewery\, for one last evening together.\n\nThe following morning\, we’ll make our final sail back to South Shore Yacht Club\, complete remaining skills and assessments\, and bring our Lake Michigan adventure to a close.\n\nOur Port-to-Pint itinerary is weather dependent. Lake conditions\, marina availability\, brewery schedules\, and the captain’s judgment may require destinations or evening activities to change. Learning when to change the plan is itself an important cruising skill.\n\nThree ASA Certifications. One Continuous Experience.\n\nRather than treating ASA 101\, 103\, and 104 as three unrelated classes\, this five-day format allows one skill to build naturally upon the next.\n\nYou begin by learning to sail\, then you learn to operate a cruising sailboat. Finally\, you learn to manage the cruise.\n\nASA 101: Keelboat Sailing\n\nYour adventure begins with the fundamentals. You’ll develop the skills necessary to understand and operate a sailboat\, including:\n\nSailing terminology and parts of the boat\nPoints of sail and wind direction\nRaising\, lowering\, and trimming sails\nSteering and maintaining a course\nTacking and jibing\nHelm commands and crew communication\nCrew-overboard prevention and recovery\nEssential sailing knots\, safety\, and seamanship\n\nASA 103 Coastal Cruising\n\nAs your confidence grows\, we’ll shift the focus from simply sailing the boat to operating a cruising sailboat. You’ll work with:\n\nCruising sailboat systems and equipment\nAuxiliary engine operation\nManeuvering under sail and power\nDocking\, backing\, and turning in confined areas\nUsing dock lines\, fenders\, and spring lines\nRecognizing and aborting an unsuccessful docking approach\nReefing and sailing with reduced sail\nWeather observation and interpretation\nPaper charts\, compass courses\, and electronic navigation\nAnchoring procedures and emergency response\n\nASA 104: Bareboat Cruising\n\nDuring the latter portion of the week\, you’ll take on greater responsibility for planning and managing the cruise\, including:\n\n\nPassage and route planning\nProvisioning and living aboard\nBoat systems and routine maintenance\nManaging electrical power\, water\, and onboard resources\nSelecting an anchorage and calculating proper scope\nDeploying\, setting\, verifying\, and retrieving the anchor\nSkipper responsibilities and decision-making\nCrew organization\, communication\, and leadership\nPreparing for and responding to emergencies\nManaging the vessel when assistance is not immediately available\n\n\nThroughout the week\, students work with both traditional and electronic navigation. You’ll learn to understand what your navigation equipment is telling you rather than simply following a line on a chartplotter.\n\nYour Instructor\nYour instructor for the week is Captain Don Doggett\, a USCG 100-Ton Master\, American Sailing Senior Master Instructor\, and Instructor Evaluator.\n\nDon brings more than 20 years of sailing and teaching experience on the Great Lakes\, along with offshore and charter experience in Bermuda\, the British Virgin Islands\, Greece\, and Croatia.\n\nHe teaches American Sailing courses through ASA 108: Offshore Passagemaking and also trains professional mariners pursuing their U.S. Coast Guard Captain’s Licenses through True North Maritime Academy\, our USCG-approved captain’s school.\n\nHis approach aboard Calypso is straightforward: teach it\, demonstrate it\, coach you through it and then let you do it.\n\nThe objective isn’t to spend five days watching an experienced captain sail. It’s to start developing another one.\n\nLife Aboard Calypso\n\nFor five days and four nights\, Calypso is home.\n\nShe’s a 2014 Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 409\, a modern 41-foot cruising sailboat with three cabins and two heads. You’ll be learning aboard the type of boat many sailors aspire to eventually own or charter.\n\nLiving aboard is part of the education.\nYou’ll learn how a cruising crew organizes the boat\, manages water and electrical resources\, provisions for a trip\, keeps gear secure underway\, prepares meals\, maintains shared spaces\, and settles into the daily rhythm of cruising.\n\nBedding is provided\, so there’s no need to bring sleeping bags or linens.\n\nCalypso does not have onboard heat. Students attending during cooler weather should bring layers\, waterproof foul-weather gear\, a warm hat and gloves\, and non-marking shoes or sailing boots with good traction.\n\nWe’ll provide a complete packing list before departure so you’ll know exactly what to bring—and what to leave at home.\n\nThe Brewery Experience\n\nWisconsin has two pretty great traditions: boating and brewing. Ales & Sails brings them together.\n\nAfter Calypso is safely docked or anchored and all sailing responsibilities for the day are finished\, the crew can relax and enjoy the local community we’ve sailed to.\n\nOur planned brewery experiences include stops in Port Washington\, Sheboygan\, and Milwaukee\, along with our special Brews at Anchor tasting aboard Calypso.\n\nThese evenings aren’t intended to turn the trip into a drinking tour. They’re about enjoying the places we visit\, sharing dinner with the crew\, discovering some interesting Wisconsin beers\, and experiencing the social side of cruising after a good day on the water.\n\nAlcohol consumption is always optional. Non-alcoholic options are welcome\, and all sailing and boat-handling activities are completed before the evening tasting or brewery visit begins.\n\nNo Sailing Experience? No Problem.\n\nThere are no sailing prerequisites for this trip. This fun Learn to Sail Vacation is designed to take you from the fundamentals of ASA 101 through the cruising skills of ASA 103 and ASA 104 during one immersive week.\n\nIt is\, however\, an active and fast-paced learning experience. We’ll send your ASA textbooks and provide access to online preparation materials before the trip. Students who spend some time with those materials before arriving can devote more of the week to actually sailing and practicing skills.\n\nYou should be comfortable moving around a sailboat\, climbing aboard and ashore\, participating in physical activities\, living in shared quarters\, working as part of a crew\, and receiving coaching throughout the week.\n\nYou don’t need to arrive knowing how to sail. You do need to arrive ready to learn.\n\nWhat’s Included\n\nCourse tuition includes:\n\n\nFive days of liveaboard sailing instruction\nASA 101: Keelboat Sailing instruction\nASA 103 Coastal Cruising instruction\nASA 104 Bareboat Cruising instruction\nASA textbooks and course materials mailed before class\nAccess to online course-preparation materials\nASA 101\, ASA 103\, and ASA 104 written examinations\nPractical skills instruction and assessments\nASA 101\, ASA 103\, and ASA 104 certifications upon successful completion\nFirst-year American Sailing membership and ASID registration\nInstruction from Captain Don Doggett\nUse of Calypso and her sailing\, navigation\, and safety equipment\nLiveaboard accommodations and bedding\nPlanned evening brewery visits in each port\nPre-course logistics\, packing information\, and provisioning coordination\n\n\nCourse Tuition\n\nPrivate Cabin – Single Passenger = $3027.00 pp\nShared Cabin = $2357.00 pp\nSalon Berth (Shared Living Area) = $1897.00 pp\n\n\nIn addition to tuition\, budget up to $50 for onboard provisions\, approximately three dinners ashore\, and whatever you choose to purchase during brewery visits.\n\nWhat Will You Take Home?\n\nHopefully\, a few favorite beers. But much more importantly\, you’ll leave with five days of genuine cruising experience that can’t be recreated in a classroom.\n\nYou’ll have sailed from port to port. You’ll have stood watch at the helm\, trimmed sails\, navigated Lake Michigan\, maneuvered a 41-foot cruising boat\, docked\, anchored\, lived aboard\, worked as part of a crew\, made decisions as skipper\, and dealt with whatever conditions Lake Michigan gave us that week.\n\nStudents who successfully complete the written examinations and practical assessments will also have the opportunity to leave with ASA 101\, ASA 103\, and ASA 104 certifications.\n\nThose certifications can help open the door to additional training\, chartering\, and eventually cruising on your own.\n\nBut earning three cards isn’t what makes this trip special. \n\nThe certifications are the result of the training. They are not the purpose of the training. The purpose is to start turning you into a sailor.\n\nFive Days. Four Nights. Three ASA Certifications. Sail by day. Explore by night. Go home a certified sailor.\n\nReady to sail Wisconsin’s Brewery Coast? REGISTER NOW

SUMMARY:ASA 104\, Bareboat Chartering | August 21st & August 22nd\, 2027 | Milwaukee\, WI
DESCRIPTION:ASA 104 Bareboat Cruising is a comprehensive cruising standard for sailors with previous cruising experience. The course prepares you to act as skipper or crew aboard a 30- to 45-foot sailboat during a multi-day cruise in inland or coastal waters. \nIn addition to cruise planning\, navigation\, boat systems\, and advanced seamanship\, you’ll learn how to respond to the “what ifs” that can arise when you are away from immediate assistance and become the first responder for your boat and crew. \nMost charter companies require a sailing resume from the skipper and look for an internationally recognized certification such as ASA 104 when evaluating qualifications to charter a bareboat. This course also prepares you to continue your sailing education with ASA 105 Coastal Navigation and ASA 106 Advanced Coastal Cruising. \nThe course is offered over two consecutive days with one optional overnight stay aboard Calypso\, our 41-foot Jeanneau Sun Odyssey. Students who successfully complete the required written examination and practical skills assessment will earn the ASA 104 certification. \nWhat You’ll Learn \nASA 104 develops the knowledge\, practical skills\, and decision-making abilities needed to plan and safely complete a multi-day cruise\, including: \n\nCruise planning\, itineraries\, and passage preparation\nProvisioning\, galley operations\, and water management\nCrew organization\, communication\, and responsibilities\nPreparing the boat and crew for departure\nElectrical\, fuel\, plumbing\, steering\, and auxiliary engine systems\nRoutine maintenance and troubleshooting\nAdvanced sail trim\, reefing\, and heavy-weather preparation\nDocking and maneuvering under sail and power\nBasic coastal navigation\, chart plotting\, and GPS operation\nWeather interpretation and voyage planning\nAdvanced anchoring and multiple-anchor techniques\nMooring procedures\nDinghy and tender operation\nHealth\, safety\, and emergency procedures\nResponding to grounding\, fire\, flooding\, equipment failure\, and medical emergencies\nInternational sailing and bareboat charter considerations\nSkipper responsibilities and decision-making when assistance is not immediately available\n\nPrerequisites \nASA 101 Keelboat Sailing 1 and ASA 103 Coastal Cruising certifications are required. Students should also be able to demonstrate the knowledge and practical skills covered in both certification standards. \nAmerican Sailing recommends completing at least 80 hours of on-the-water sailing experience before beginning ASA 104. Students should arrive comfortable handling a cruising sailboat and prepared to take an active role as both skipper and crew. \nWhat’s Included \nCourse tuition includes: \n\nTwo days of sailing instruction\nASA 104 Bareboat Cruising instruction\nASA 104 Bareboat Cruising Made Easy textbook and course materials mailed to the student upon sign-up\, ahead of class\nASA 104 written examination and practical skills assessment\nASA 104 certification upon successful completion\nInstruction from professional USCG-licensed captains\nAll of your sailing time aboard our training sailboat\, including use of the boat and all required sailing equipment.\nA no-cost make-up session if severe or unsafe weather prevents the class from completing the required on-the-water skills\n\nSailing is naturally weather dependent. Whenever possible\, we adjust the course activities around changing conditions. If severe weather makes sailing unsafe\, we’ll work with the class to schedule any necessary make-up time at no additional cost. \nCourse Tuition \n$1097.00 per person \nThis is an overnight liveaboard course\, get prepared for a multi-day cruise\, build your qualifications for future charter adventures\, and take the next step in your sailing education. SUMMARY:Burgees & Breezes 5-Day Learn to Sail & Lake Michigan Sailing & Yacht Club Adventure | September 6th through September 10th\, 2027
DESCRIPTION:Step aboard Calypso\, our 2014 Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 409\, for a five-day liveaboard Learn-to-Sail Vacation built around a club-to-club cruise along Wisconsin’s Lake Michigan shoreline. \nThis immersive sailing experience combines ASA 101: Keelboat Sailing\, ASA 103: Coastal Cruising\, and ASA 104: Bareboat Cruising with something you simply can’t get in a traditional weekend sailing class: the experience of living aboard\, traveling from port to port\, and operating a genuine cruising sailboat as part of the crew. \nYou’ll eat\, sleep\, sail\, navigate\, dock\, anchor\, and help manage the boat throughout the week. Students rotate through every position aboard Calypso\, and as skills and confidence develop\, Captain Don increasingly steps back. Each student has opportunities to take the helm\, direct the crew\, make decisions\, and serve as skipper while Captain Don coaches and steps in when necessary. \nAlong the way\, you’ll also experience one of the great traditions of Great Lakes cruising: arriving at a yacht club as a visiting crew. You’ll help plan harbor approaches\, prepare Calypso for guest docking\, secure the boat for the evening\, and then head ashore to experience the clubs and sailing communities along the Wisconsin shoreline. \nYour Instructor\nYour instructor is Captain Don Doggett\, a USCG 100-Ton Master\, American Sailing Senior Master Instructor\, and Instructor Evaluator. \nDon brings more than 20 years of sailing and teaching experience on the Great Lakes\, along with offshore and charter experience in Bermuda\, the British Virgin Islands\, Greece\, and Croatia. \nHe teaches American Sailing courses through ASA 108: Offshore Passagemaking and also trains professional mariners through our USCG-approved captain’s school\, True North Maritime Academy. \nThroughout the week\, his role gradually changes from instructor to coach. The goal isn’t for you to watch Captain Don operate the boat. The goal is for you to learn to operate it. \nWhat You’ll Learn\nThe week progresses naturally from fundamental sailing skills to coastal cruising and\, ultimately\, the responsibilities of planning and managing a multi-day cruise. \nASA 101 Keelboat Sailing 1\nYou’ll begin by building the fundamental skills necessary to understand\, sail\, and safely operate a keelboat\, including: \n\nSailing terminology and parts of the boat\nPoints of sail and wind direction\nRaising\, lowering\, and trimming sails\nSteering and maintaining a course\nTacking and jibing\nHelm commands and crew communication\nCrew-overboard prevention and recovery\nEssential sailing knots\, safety\, and seamanship\n\nASA 103 Coastal Cruising\nAs the voyage progresses\, you’ll transition to operating a larger auxiliary-powered cruising sailboat and begin developing the skills necessary to travel from port to port\, including: \n\nCruising sailboat systems and equipment\nAuxiliary engine operation\nManeuvering under sail and power\nDocking\, backing\, and turning in confined areas\nUsing dock lines\, fenders\, and spring lines\nRecognizing and aborting an unsuccessful docking approach\nReefing and sailing with reduced sail\nWeather observation and interpretation\nPaper charts\, compass courses\, and electronic navigation\nAnchoring procedures and emergency response\n\nASA 104: Bareboat Cruising\nDuring the latter portion of the week\, you’ll take on greater responsibility for planning the voyage\, managing the boat\, and leading the crew. Topics and skills include: \n\nPassage and route planning\nProvisioning and living aboard\nBoat systems and routine maintenance\nManaging electrical power\, water\, and onboard resources\nSelecting an anchorage and calculating proper scope\nDeploying\, setting\, verifying\, and retrieving the anchor\nSkipper responsibilities and decision-making\nCrew organization\, communication\, and leadership\nPreparing for and responding to emergencies\nManaging the vessel when assistance is not immediately available\n\nThroughout the voyage\, students work with both traditional and electronic navigation. You’ll learn to understand what your instruments and chartplotter are telling you rather than simply following a line on a screen. \nThis Is Real Cruising\nThis isn’t five days of sailing in circles near the marina. Students should expect the majority of each day to revolve around sailing\, boat handling\, navigation\, passage making\, docking\, anchoring\, and the everyday responsibilities of operating a cruising sailboat. \nOur planned Monday-through-Friday voyage begins and ends at South Shore Yacht Club in Milwaukee. From there\, we’ll set out along Wisconsin’s Lake Michigan shoreline for a combination of sailing\, an overnight at anchor\, and visits to several yacht clubs and waterfront communities. \nBut this is real cruising\, so our itinerary is intentionally flexible. Lake Michigan ultimately determines where we can safely go. Wind\, waves\, thunderstorms\, visibility\, marina availability\, and other conditions may require us to alter the route\, change destinations\, or remain closer to port. That’s all part of the training! \nLearning to evaluate conditions\, modify a passage plan\, select a safe alternative\, and explain those decisions to your crew is an important part of becoming a capable cruising skipper. \nThe Yacht Club Experience\nOne of the highlights of this adventure is experiencing Lake Michigan’s yacht clubs from the perspective of a visiting cruising crew. \nBefore each arrival\, students participate in reviewing harbor information\, planning the approach\, contacting the marina or club when appropriate\, assigning crew responsibilities\, preparing dock lines and fenders\, and bringing Calypso safely into her guest berth. \nOnce the boat is secured and the day’s sailing responsibilities are complete\, the evening becomes part of the vacation. \nHead ashore with your crewmates for dinner or a drink\, explore the waterfront\, meet local sailors\, and experience the traditions and camaraderie that make yacht clubs such an important part of the Great Lakes sailing community. \nDepending on our final route\, weather\, guest policies\, and club availability\, planned stops may include South Shore Yacht Club\, Milwaukee Yacht Club\, Sheboygan Yacht Club\, Racine Yacht Club\, and other suitable destinations along the Wisconsin shoreline. \nAlong the way\, we’ll also introduce you to yacht club traditions\, burgees\, guest etiquette\, and the ways clubs connect sailors through cruising\, racing\, education\, and social activities. \nThe exact clubs and experiences will vary based on our route\, operating hours\, guest policies\, scheduled activities\, and conditions during the week. \nPrerequisites\nNo previous sailing experience or ASA certification is required. \nBecause the course combines three certification levels into five immersive days\, students should arrive prepared for an active\, fast-paced learning experience. Course books and online preparation materials are provided ahead of time so students can become familiar with the material before arriving. \nStudents should be comfortable moving around and living aboard a sailboat\, participating in physical activities\, working as part of a crew\, and receiving coaching throughout the week. \nLife Aboard Calypso\nCalypso is a 2014 Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 409\, a 41-foot modern cruising sailboat with three cabins and two heads. Living aboard gives students practical experience with the type of boat\, accommodations\, equipment\, and onboard systems they may encounter as they progress toward independent cruising and bareboat chartering. \nBedding is provided\, so students do not need to bring sleeping bags or linens. \nCalypso does not have onboard heat. Students attending during cooler weather should bring layers\, waterproof foul-weather gear\, a warm hat and gloves\, and non-marking shoes or sailing boots with good traction. A complete packing list will be emailed before the course. \nSea Safaris coordinates provisioning for the week. Each student should plan to contribute up to **$50 toward onboard provisions** and bring money for approximately three dinners ashore\, personal purchases during yacht club visits\, and any preferred snacks or beverages. \nWhat’s Included\nCourse tuition includes: \n\nFive days of liveaboard sailing instruction\nASA 101: Keelboat Sailing instruction\nASA 103 Coastal Cruising instruction\nASA 104 Bareboat Cruising instruction\nASA textbooks and course materials mailed before class\nAccess to online course-preparation materials\nASA 101\, ASA 103\, and ASA 104 written examinations\nPractical skills instruction and assessments\nASA 101\, ASA 103\, and ASA 104 certifications upon successful completion\nFirst-year American Sailing membership and ASID registration\nInstruction from Captain Don Dogget\nUse of Calypso and her sailing\, navigation\, and safety equipment\nLiveaboard accommodations and bedding\nPlanned yacht club visits and guest-arrival experiences\nPre-course logistics\, packing information\, and provisioning coordination\n\nFormat\nFive-day liveaboard sailing adventure\, Monday\, September 6th through Friday\, September 10th\, 2027. Because this is real cruising\, the exact route and yacht club stops may change based on weather\, lake conditions\, marina availability\, club schedules\, and the captain’s judgment. \nCourse Tuition & Cabin Options\n\nPrivate Cabin $3027.00\nShared Cabin $2357.00\nSalon Berth (Shared Living Area) $1897.00\n\nStudents should also budget up to $50 for onboard provisions\, approximately three dinners ashore\, and any drinks or personal purchases during yacht club visits. \nWhat You’ll Take Home\nBy Friday\, you’ll have done considerably more than attend a sailing class. \nYou’ll have lived aboard a cruising sailboat\, stood watches at the helm\, trimmed sails\, navigated Lake Michigan\, docked in unfamiliar harbors\, spent a night at anchor\, arrived at yacht clubs as a visiting crew\, helped manage a multi-day voyage\, and taken your turn as skipper. \nStudents who successfully complete the written examinations and practical skills requirements can earn ASA 101\, ASA 103\, and ASA 104 certifications. \nThose certifications represent an important milestone\, but becoming a capable skipper takes continued experience. Graduates are encouraged to keep building time at the helm\, practice docking and boat handling\, and gain experience aboard progressively larger and more complex boats before independently chartering.
