Build the skills and confidence to safely navigate a sailing vessel in coastal and inland waters, even when you cannot rely solely on electronic navigation.

ASA 105 is an in-depth, classroom-based course designed to help you better understand coastal navigation and how your vessel interacts with the world around you. Through instructor-led lessons and hands-on chart work, you will learn how to interpret nautical charts, use maritime publications and navigation equipment, plot courses and positions, account for tides and currents, and make informed navigational decisions.

Beyond your GPS, you’ll develop the traditional navigation skills needed to safely plan and complete passages through waters affected by changing tides, currents, wind, and leeway.

ASA 105 is a knowledge-based course taught entirely in the classroom. There is no on-the-water portion. No previous ASA certification is required, although the course is especially valuable for sailors preparing for ASA 106: Advanced Coastal Cruising or anyone who wants a stronger understanding of coastal navigation.
