Sailing skills are like any other skill. If you haven’t used them in a while, a little focused practice can make a tremendous difference.

ASA 111 Sailing 101 Review is a hands-on refresher for sailors who have already completed ASA 101 Keelboat Sailing 1 but would like an opportunity to revisit the fundamentals in a structured course environment.

You’ll return to the boat with an instructor, review essential concepts and spend the day practicing the skills that help make sailing feel comfortable and natural again. Whether you are preparing for your next ASA course, returning to sailing after time away or simply want more experience on the water, this course will help rebuild your confidence.

There is no examination because you already completed that requirement when you earned your ASA 101 certification. This is a review and practice course, not a replacement for the original ASA 101 course.

What You’ll Review

During the course, you’ll revisit and practice:

• Basic sailing terminology and parts of the boat
• Pre-departure preparation and safety procedures
• Points of sail and steering a consistent course
• Sail trim and recognizing when sails need adjustment
• Tacking and jibing
• Crew positions, responsibilities and communication
• Starting, stopping and controlling the boat under sail
• Crew-overboard recovery procedures
• Right-of-way rules and situational awareness
• Essential sailing knots and their uses
• Safe decision-making in changing wind and weather conditions
• The exact skills emphasized may be adjusted based on conditions and the experience and goals of the participating sailors.

Prerequisites

Students must have previously completed:

ASA 101 Keelboat Sailing 1

This course is intended for certified sailors who want additional practice or a refresher. Students seeking their initial ASA 101 certification should register for the complete ASA 101 Keelboat Sailing 1 course.

• One day of live, instructor-led sailing review
• Six hours of hands-on instruction and practice
• Review of ASA 101 knowledge and practical sailing skills
• Use of the training sailboat

There is no written examination or certification exam.

A new ASA 101 textbook is not included because students should already have Sailing Made Easy from their original course. Students are encouraged to review the book beforehand and may bring it with them if they have questions they would like to discuss.
